How to Get There
Plane
T.F. Green Airport (PVD) is the closest airport to Newport, ~35-40 minute drive. uber or car rental is your best bet to get to town.
Boston Logan Airport (BOS) is ~1.5 hour drive to Newport. you can either rent a car, UBer, or take a train to Providence and continue on to Newport.
Train
Amtrak from PEnn Station (NYC) to Providence Station (PVD) takes 3-3.5 hours, followed by a 40 minute car ride to newport. Certain amtrak trains from Penn Station stop in Kingston, RI (KIN), with a slightly shorter 3 hour train ride, followed by a 25-30 minute car ride to Newport.
Amtrak from South station (BOS) To providence station (PVD) takes 45 minutes to an hour depending on the train (ACELA is the fastest). Trains from South Station to kingston, RI (KIN) take 1 hour, though there are fewer train times available.
Automobile
NYC is a 3-4 hour drive to newport. Boston is a 1-2 hour Drive, depending on time of departure. be mindful of rush hour (not the movie).

There are many excellent places to stay in newport to compliment all tastes: upscale hotels, quaint bed and breakfasts, classic new england inns, as well as various airbnbs / vrbos.
